Theological Meaning of Bodhisattva
One who aspires to Buddhahood, a state characterized by compassion in which one seeks enlightenment both for themselves and others. Bodhictta, devotion to assisting others. The Buddha, Gautama Shakyamuni, entrusts the mission of sharing the Buddhist philosophy in the Fifteenth Chapter of the Lotus Sutra, at the beginning of the essential teachings, in this Chapter many come forward from other domains, other far distance galaxies and offer to teach the Buddhist Law in our world, but Shakyamuni refuses, saying that in the saha world there are bodhasattvas who will carry out this goal. The are lead by four leaders, Jogyo, Mhuengyo, Jyogyo and Anryugyo, protectors of the North, East, South and West. In the Twenty First Chapter the Buddha transfers the teaching of the Law, to the Bodhisattvas of the Earth, entrusting them with the Ten Thousand Years of the Latter Day of the Law. The great master teacher, priest, scholar of China, Tien Tai [ 538 – 597 c.e. ] shares that theemergence of ones bodhisattva nature lies in the inner depth of this life.
Within our own life, the strong desire to help others find their true Buddha Nature!
Bodhisattvas of the essential teaching: these are the Bodhisattvas taught directly by the Buddha in his many lifetimes, in many lands, such as Monju who represents wisdom and enlightenment, and Fugen, universally worthy, represents truth and practice, he vows to protect the Lotus Sutra and all who follow its precepts and principles. This bodhisattva is empowered to prolong life and is therefore the Bodhisttava of Good Health and Long Life.
Bodhisattva of the theoretical teaching: these are bodhisattvas who in order to help relieve suffering, assume a transient role in accordance with the capacity of those they vow to help. Therefore they are known as guardian energies who can be called upon to help relieve one who is in pain or suffering from the challenges of this life. Bodhisattvas then are seen in the Buddhist wisdom teachings as very important entities who take various shapes and forms within the inter-dependent reality of eternal Life.
